As almost 21million pupils in the Philippines trooped to school for the first day of
term today, some had to go to more extreme lengths to get to class on time. Filipino
youngsters travelled on a bamboo raft to get to school in a remote village in Rizal
province, east of Manila. The students had to cross a river on route to school and
they hitched a ride on the thin makeshift raft.
